The Emma Willlard Intranet

The Emma Willard Intranet is a front-end (portal) for a bunch of documents of (theoretical) interest to the Emma Community. It is ad-hoc, the work of many hands, sprinkled with in-jokes, and has very little unity of style. It stands in contrast to the main Web site for Emma Willard, which is centrally-controlled, designed by professionals, and has few spelling mistakes.

Organization of the Intranet Site

The front page is a two-frame page. The left frame provides navigation links and imposes some organization on the site. It is far from perfect, being primarily the product of Barry's mind, which is, at best, differently-wired, although of late Jude deserves some of the blame/credit. The right (main) frame, at first, contains some convenience links, then changes to display other pages as you click around. The site isn't too bad if what you want to do is read the pages on your screen. It's not much good at serving up pages for printing. For that reason some pages have been converted to PDF.

The site is due for an overhaul. Anybody interested?

Internal and External Views

We don't mind sharing many of the pages served out by the intranet server. Others, primarily pages that mention our girls by name, are restricted. This works as follows: If you are using a computer on campus, all the contents are visible (except for a few pages that are restricted further); if you are off campus, you'll be blocked from viewing parts of the site.

Department/Teacher/Office Sites

Because the intranet is designed to be the work of many hands, those offices and departments that have the will and wherewithal put up their own pages. In most cases we've accomplished this by setting aside some file space in a convenient place for those who contribute, then pointing our Web server at that file space. For example, in the Science folder on the faculty file server, next to the department member home directories (network folders), we created a folder called Web. Anything placed in there is available at http://intranet.emmawillard.org/Science. Publishing is as easy as moving files into a folder.
